Shopify Google Ads Conversion Tracking with GTM and Enhanced Conversions

By Alessandro Colarossi, Founder, Triangle Digital · Published · 9 min read

Short answer

To track Shopify purchases in Google Ads with Google Tag Manager: create a Purchase conversion action in Google Ads to get a Conversion ID and Label, add a Conversion Linker tag (all pages) and a Google Ads Conversion Tracking tag that fires on your purchase data layer event with the order value, currency and transaction_id, then enable Enhanced Conversions so hashed customer data improves matching. Use one primary conversion source, either this native tag or an imported GA4 key event, never both.

Two ways to get Shopify sales into Google Ads

Native Google Ads tag vs importing GA4 key events
ApproachNative Google Ads conversion tag (GTM)Import GA4 key event

Enhanced ConversionsSupported directly on the tagSupported through GA4 / Google tag settings
Speed and controlFires immediately, full control over value and order IDDepends on GA4 processing, less control
Best forAccounts that optimize bidding on purchase valueTeams that want GA4 as the single source of truth

This guide covers the native tag route, which most Shopify advertisers use because it gives the cleanest control over value, order ID and Enhanced Conversions.

Step 1: Create the conversion action in Google Ads

  1. In Google Ads go to Goals → Conversions → New conversion action → Website.
  2. Choose Purchase as the category and set the value to Use different values for each conversion (you will pass the real order value).
  3. Set the count to Every conversion, since a customer can buy more than once.
  4. Choose to set up manually with Google Tag Manager and copy the Conversion ID and Conversion Label.

Step 2: Add the tags in Google Tag Manager

  1. Conversion Linker tag, trigger All Pages. It stores the Google click ID (gclid) in a first-party cookie so a later purchase can be attributed to the ad click.
  2. Google Ads Conversion Tracking tag, trigger Custom Event `purchase`.
  3. In that tag, set Conversion ID and Conversion Label from step 1.
  4. Set Conversion Value to a Data Layer Variable for ecommerce.value, Currency Code to ecommerce.currency, and Order ID to ecommerce.transaction_id.

These variables come straight from the purchase event your Customer Events pixel pushes. If that event is missing or malformed, nothing downstream will work, so confirm it first with the GA4 ecommerce guide and the Customer Events guide.

Why the Order ID matters

Google Ads uses the Order ID to de-duplicate conversions. Shopify's checkout_completed event can fire again if a customer reloads the thank-you page, and without a unique order ID that reload becomes a second sale in your reports. Always send the Shopify order ID as transaction_id and map it to the Order ID field.

Step 3: Turn on Enhanced Conversions

Enhanced Conversions lets you send first-party customer data, such as email, phone and address, alongside the conversion. The data is hashed with SHA-256 before it leaves the browser, and Google matches it against signed-in Google accounts to recover conversions that cookies alone would miss. That improves measurement and gives Smart Bidding more signal.

  1. In Google Ads: Goals → Settings → Enhanced conversions for web and turn it on, accepting the customer data terms. Choose Google Tag Manager as the method.
  2. In your Shopify pixel, include the customer's email, phone and address from checkout_completed in a user_data object pushed with the purchase event.
  3. In GTM, create a User-Provided Data variable that reads those fields from the data layer.
  4. In the Google Ads Conversion Tracking tag, tick Include user-provided data from your website and select that variable.
  5. Check Goals → Diagnostics in Google Ads for Enhanced Conversions status after a few days of traffic.

Remarketing and dynamic remarketing

If you run remarketing, your view_item, add_to_cart and purchase events need an items array whose item_id values match your Merchant Center feed. Mismatched IDs are the most common reason dynamic remarketing audiences stay empty. See the rules section of the data layer guide.

Step 4: Verify conversions are recording

  • In GTM Preview, confirm the Conversion Linker fired on landing and the Conversion Tracking tag fired exactly once on purchase, with the correct value and order ID.
  • In Google Ads open Goals → Conversions and check the status. A new action usually moves from “No recent conversions” to “Recording conversions” after a real conversion arrives.
  • Place a real or test order after clicking one of your own ads, then allow time for reporting. Conversions can take hours to appear.
  • Compare Google Ads conversion value to Shopify revenue from Google-attributed orders. Different attribution windows mean they will not match exactly, but they should be in the same range.

Common Google Ads tracking mistakes on Shopify

  • Native tag and GA4 import both set to Primary, double counting every sale.
  • No Order ID, so reloads create duplicate conversions.
  • Value sent as a string like $49.00 or in a different currency than your account expects.
  • Conversion Linker missing, so click IDs are lost and attribution drops.
  • Old Additional Scripts or the Google & YouTube app still firing a second purchase conversion.
  • Conversion firing on the wrong event, such as begin_checkout, which inflates conversion counts and teaches bidding to chase checkouts, not sales.

Frequently asked questions

How do I track Shopify purchases in Google Ads with GTM?

Create a Purchase conversion action in Google Ads, then in GTM add a Conversion Linker tag and a Google Ads Conversion Tracking tag firing on your purchase event, passing value, currency and order ID.

What are Enhanced Conversions for Shopify?

Enhanced Conversions send hashed first-party customer data, such as email and phone, with a conversion so Google can match more sales to ad clicks. It improves measurement and Smart Bidding signals.

Should I import GA4 purchases or use the Google Ads tag?

Either works, but only set one as the Primary conversion action. The native tag gives more control over value and order ID, while GA4 import keeps GA4 as the single source of truth.

Why are my Google Ads conversions higher than my Shopify orders?

The most common causes are duplicate counting (native tag plus GA4 import both Primary), missing Order ID so reloads count twice, or a conversion firing on checkout steps instead of purchase.

Do I need the Conversion Linker tag?

Yes. It stores the ad click ID in a first-party cookie so Google Ads can attribute the later purchase to the click. Fire it on all pages.
